Formula 1 racecourses
Now what would the Formula 1 be without its amazing sights and tracks. Monaco, Spa, Monza to name a few, are all home to many Championships and have gifted us some of the best Formula 1 races ever. But which tracks are currently regarded as the best?
- Well, a case can certainly be made for Silverstone in the UK. Plenty of spots for overtakes – whereas other tracks can barely scrape together one, realistically – great turnout every year and of course the capricious British weather make this one a highly competitive race.
- Spa in Belgium is the longest track in the calendar, with many high-speed corners and a blind hill most drivers relentlessly attack at full throttle. It’s just too much good fun.
- Another contender would be Interlagos in Brazil with its famous three corners. These “Senna Esses” are great to watch, especially in the first five to ten laps. And who could forget Lewis Hamilton winning his first title with an overtake on the last lap back in 2008?
- The Imola Grand Prix is a fearsome track. A lot of difficult corners and little room for run-off make this one of the most dangerous tracks to date.
- After a 10 year break, the Austrian Grand Prix is known for its short track, lots of corners and even more spots for an aggressive overtake. Beautiful scenery, too.
- Monza has been part of Formula 1 for every year since 1950, with one exception for repairs and refurbishments we believe. Its layout has evolved a lot, leading to perhaps the fastest track in the entire year. Lewis Hamilton set the fastest lap in history in 2020 in Monza, with an average speed of 164.267 mph.
The drivers
As much as some fans love the engineering and the spectacle, most fans are deeply involved in the many different storylines Formula One generates every year. While the UK can be proud to have three drivers in competition, Hamilton, Norris and Russell, legends past hail from all corners of the world:
- Lewis Hamilton is perhaps the most accomplished driver in history. Seven championships, more than 100 wins and over 4000 career points, he is currently chasing his 8th title to set himself apart from the next guy on our list.
- Michael Schumacher is still for many people the face for F1. He and Jean Todt dragged Ferrari to five consecutive championships and became synonymous with racing in millions of households. We are of the opinion that Ferrari can call themselves lucky to have had this guy driving for them.
- Sebastian Vettel absolutely dominated F1 in the early 2010s. Records for most wins in a season, most pole positions in a season and the youngest world champion speak for themselves. An absolute shame how Ferrari treated this man.
- Alain Prost was perhaps one of the most precise drivers in the history of the sport. Four championships do not begin to describe what a good driver he was.
- Ayrton Senna will be the most natural and ambitious driver in the minds of many. His 1991 title is lauded by many experts to be his greatest achievement.
- Jackie Stewart was one of the first drivers to argue for and strive towards better safety standards. Seatbelts, full-face helmets, and even mobile medical units are all his to thank for. Oh, and he won three titles by the way.
- Niki Lauda. To describe how that man rolled needs no further pointers but his 1976 season. His infamous Nürburgring crash had him severely burned and disfigured, and he still only lost to James Hunt by 1 measly point. It was him who brought Hamilton to Mercedes too!
- Among other, great British drivers are of course James Hunt – the ever-unruly Playboy driver – and Graham Hill. The latter’s son Damon Hill won the title in 1996. David Coulthard came in as a replacement for Ayrton Senna in the middle of 1994 and has competed in the most races and won the most points than any other British racer by the time of his retirement.
