The AFL and how it works

The AFL is contested by 18 clubs, split across the traditional Victorian heartland (Collingwood, Essendon, Carlton, Richmond, Hawthorn, St Kilda, Melbourne, Geelong, North Melbourne, Western Bulldogs) plus interstate clubs (Sydney Swans, Brisbane Lions, Adelaide, Port Adelaide, West Coast Eagles, Fremantle, Gold Coast Suns, Greater Western Sydney).

How Australian Football is played

• Bouncing — players carrying the ball must bounce or touch it to the ground every 15 metres
• No offside — meaning the play flows end-to-end with no positional restrictions, one of the reasons the sport is so physically demanding
• Tackles — legal between shoulders and knees; a tackled player must dispose of the ball cleanly or concede a free kick
